Purposes of ultrasound examination and When it is used during Pregnancy

Ultrasound is a very common modality used during pregnangy. This tool monitors the fetus/embryo to provide accurate predictions and information of fetal growth.  It is non-invasion, convenient, and inexpensive.

The chart below outlines the period (in gestational age) and main use of ultrasound.

Main use of obstetric ultrasound
1. Diagnosis of early pregnancy
visualization of: gestational sac(4.5 wks), yolk sac (5 wks), embryo (5.5 wks)
2. Vaginal bleeding in early pregnancy
determines the viability of fetus, 83% survival of fetus if heart beat detected in 6-7 wks
3. Determination of fetal age and size
Crown-rump length (7-13wks), Biparietal diameter (13wks +), others femur length, abdominal circumference
4. Diagnosis of fetal malformation
fetal malformations can be detected before 20wks gest. age. (i.e. abnormal nasal bone, cleft lips, congenital cardiac malformations, spina bifida etc.)
5. Placenta location
determines site of placenta, borders, and placental abnormalities (i.e. placenta previa, fetal hydrops etc.)
